Change the City

This month’s Change the City goes to The Cold Night Shelter

The Cold-Night Shelter is a temporary shelter for adults who need a warm place to stay when the main Shelter located on Tennessee Street is filled to capacity. The temporary cold-night shelter opens when temperatures are forecasted to drop below 35 degrees for more than three hours. The location of the Cold-Night Shelter is Belle Vue Middle School, approximately 65 to 70 people stay at this location. This is all coordinated by the Big Bend Homeless Coalition. During the nights, volunteers from the local faith-based community provides assistance and Trinity is one of the churches that helps.
The individuals that stay at the Cold-Night Shelter first eat dinner at the main Shelter and then StarMetro transports them to the temporary shelter at Belle Vue Middle School. The temporary shelter opens at 8:00 p.m. and closes the next morning at 7:00 a.m. Snacks and water are provided for those that stay and showers are available.
The Cold-Night Shelter is for adults only, and families with children are encouraged to stay at the main Shelter.
The change that each of us drop off on Sundays will go to the Big Bend Homeless Coalition and designated to the Cold-Night Shelter.
For more information or to volunteer at the temporary shelter location, call the Big Bend Homeless Coalition at 576-5566 or 205-6005 or go to the website at www.bigbendhc.org.
